Slip & Fall Accidents: Leading Cause Of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Florida slip and fall accidents occur in high numbers every year, often resulting in serious injuries such as hip fractures and other broken bones, orthopaedic injuries, and trauma to the head. Perhaps the scariest of slip and fall injuries is a serious blow to the head, as in traumatic brain injury (TBI). According to the Center for Disease Control, 28% of all traumatic brain injuries are caused by slip and fall accidents, which are the leading cause of TBI. If you have been injured in a slip and fall (premises liability) accident and believe that you may have suffered a head or brain injury, go to the doctor or emergency room as soon as possible. Although it seems as if brain injuries would be obvious to the injured, some suffer blows to the head without realizing the serious nature or extent of their injuries. Among symptoms of TBI are the following:

Common Symptoms of a Mild Brain Injury: Ringing in the ears, blurred vision, confusion, headache, forgetfulness, mood swings, trouble with concentration, temporary unconsciousness, and a strange taste in the mouth.

Typical Symptoms of Moderate to Severe Brain Injuries: seizures, swelling, irritability, nausea, visual problems and dilated pupils, chronic headache, numbness in the extremities, sleepiness, lack of coordination, slurred speech, difficulty with problem solving, and changes in conduct or personality.

Even if you do not experience any of these symptoms, consult with your physician if you have sustained serious trauma to the head. Even minor head or brain injuries often require serious treatment. Regardless of the degree of your injury or extent of medical treatment, you may be able to file a personal injury claim against the responsible party in the accident. Slip and fall accidents occur in many different locations, but business owners, homeowners, and other property owners must ensure that their properties are safe for all visitors.
