Why Male Cyclists in Florida Might Be at Risk When Riding to Work

Bicycling is a hobby that both children and adults can enjoy. While it used to be a hobby that was loved by children more than adults, times have changed and the popularity of cycling among adults has increased. On the other hand, fewer children in the U.S. ride bikes than past generations. Interestingly, the statistics for fatal bike deaths echo this trend in bicycle riding.

According to a study led by Jason Vargo of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, fatal bicycle accidents involving kids have decreased but have risen for adults. The reason for this is that less kids are riding bikes nowadays, but more adults – especially men – ride bicycles every day as a way of commuting to work. In fact, bicycle commuters have increased by 61 percent between 2000-2012.

Because the profile for the typical bicycle rider has changed over the years, so have the bicycle accident statistics. From 1975 to 2012, bike-related deaths for children younger than 15 fell 92 percent during this time, but increased tremendously in adults. According to the study, the biggest increase in fatal bike accidents involved cyclists between the ages of 35 to 54, and men accounted for 87 percent of bicycle deaths in adults by 2012.

The study revealed that death rates varied between states, but were the highest in Florida. This means that if you are a male cyclist living in the Sunshine State, you may be at an increased risk for being in a serious bicycle accident. Although the statistics indicate this, it doesn’t have to be this way. Things can be done to help protect bikers who commute from adding bike lanes to reducing speed limits and adding more speeding bumps.
