In 2012, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released a report detailing the number of accidents caused by drunk driving in the United States. The report concluded that, despite recent decreases, the number of drunk driving accidents remains high.
In 2010, more than 10,000 people died as a result of a drunk driver, which is the equivalent of one death every 51 minutes. Nearly one-third of all traffic-related deaths involved alcohol.
The study shows that younger demographics are most often responsible for these types of accidents. The small group of drivers between 21 and 24 have been behind the wheel for 34 percent of all alcohol-related incidents, while drivers between 21 and 34 are the cause of 64 percent of such accidents. The study also shows that drunk drivers often do not learn their lesson, as repeat offenders are four times more likely to be the cause of a fatal crash.
