Believe it or not, July 4th that is a time of celebration, is historically one of the worst days for traffic fatalities of the year. As a matter of fact, it is the deadliest day on average for America’s teens.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has indicated that between 2006 and 2010, approximately 800 people were killed in car crashes and roughly 10% of those killed were teenage drivers. Car crashes are the #1 killer of Americans between ages 1 to 34.
If you have a teenage driver as well as yourself, it is important to review driving guidelines during this busy upcoming July 4th holiday.
Here are some tips to follow:
- Never drink and drive
- Don’t text and drive.
- Pay close attention to the road and other drivers. You don’t know who has had too much to drink.
- Use signals to change lanes.
- Have a designated driver if you have had too much too drink.
- Make sure that your car is working properly if you plan on going out of town.
Many people start the July 4th holiday early with barbeques, drinks and parties. Make sure you don’t end your holiday in a fatality or causing another person to be injured. Stay safe and use common sense.
