In 2004, 3,713 motorcyclists were killed on the nation’s roadways. Sadly, this statistic has increased to 4,399 motorcycle fatalities in 2013 (the latest reported year). According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 1,232 of these deaths were alcohol related, involving a motorcyclist with a blood alcohol content over .08 percent.
While alcohol has sadly always been a factor in traffic collisions, another factor that contributed to fatal motorcycle crashes is speeding. NHTSA data shows that 34 percent of motorcyclists involved in fatal collisions were speeding.
Although these motorcycle fatalities reveal that some motorcyclists were negligent and responsible for their own deaths, the majority of motorcycle crashes involve other vehicles and occur as a result of carelessness on the part of other drivers. For example, the most common type of fatal motorcycle crash involving another vehicle is when a vehicle turns left while a motorcycle is going straight. According to NHTSA data, this type of motorcycle crash was responsible for 42 percent of fatal collisions in 2013.
The statistics indicate the majority of fatal crashes occurred during the week, with 2,301 motorcycle riders killed Monday through Friday. Although there were more motorcycle operators killed during the week, there were more fatal crashes involving alcohol over the weekend.
The statistics indicate that it is almost as equally as dangerous to ride a motorcycle during the week and weekend. However, these statistics remind all motorcyclists how important it is to obey the speed limits and never drive drunk. Additionally, these statistics should remind all drivers to stop turning left or pulling out in front of motorcycles.
Fatal Motorcycle Crashes in Florida
Sadly, 485 riders were killed in Florida motorcycle crashes during the same year. Statistics indicate that 237 of these riders killed were unhelmeted. While wearing motorcycle helmets helps save lives, it is not always the case depending on the violence of the collision.
