A man from Palm Beach County won $14.6 million Tuesday as the result of a tragic auto accident that paralyzed him in 2007, according to Rafael A. Olmeda of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. The driver of an 18-wheeler truck, 64-year-old Derry Brown of Pahokee, FL, was left a quadriplegic after swerving to avoid crashing with a car that had run a stop sign on State Rd. 80 on May 31, 2007.
According to Brown’s attorney, Robert Kelley, the driver of the car would most likely have died as a result of the collision if truck driver Derry Brown had not swerved. Since the other driver failed to stop, Brown filed a Florida car accident claim against his insurance company, National Casualty Company, which denied him coverage. After filing suit against the insurance company for uninsured motorist benefits, he was finally awarded compensation for injuries, pain & suffering, medical bills, and other losses and expenses. The $14.6 million amount was decided in Broward Circuit Court in Broward County, FL. According to the Sun-Sentinel, Brown is still treating at Hardee County’s Florida Institute for Neurological Rehabilitation.
