During the Labor Day weekend, many car accidents occur as well as pedestrian, motorcycle and bicycle accidents. Unfortunately, many drivers are buzzed and drunk when they get behind the wheel; however, drunk drivers aren’t the only reason why collisions occur over the Labor Day weekend. In fact, distracted drivers are one the biggest reasons why crashes occur on any given day.
Because of the holiday, it is very possible that drivers will be distracted as they look for directions to the party, text someone about their holiday plans, read Facebook to see what others are up to, and take selfies and post them to Twitter or Instagram — all from the wheel of a moving motor vehicle. While you might not participate in distracted driving, it may shock you to know just how many people do.
According to an AT&T survey, 70 percent of adults surveyed said they use their smartphones behind the wheel, and 61 percent said they’ve sent, replied or read text messages while driving. Shockingly, many of those surveyed also admitted to using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube and email all while driving.
While some drivers participate in this type of behavior when they are stopped in traffic or at red lights, many people participate in these types of cell phone activities while driving because they feel they can manage doing both things at once. While this is one excuse for people to using their smartphones behind the wheel, others do it out of addiction, boredom, or fear they will miss something.
Whatever the reason, when drivers participate in distracted driving, they are more likely to miss something going on outside of their vehicles. As a result, they may hit other cars, bicyclists, motorcyclists and even pedestrians.
Because Labor Day weekend typically sees an increase in traffic, you can bet many drivers will be driving distracted.
