3 Very Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

Thousands of motorcyclists are injured or killed during crashes every year. Most of these accidents are not the fault of the motorcyclist, but are instead caused by multiple vehicles. The three most common causes of motorcycle accidents are:

  • Left-Hand Turns: Over 40 percent of all motorcycle accidents occur because a car is making a left-hand turn and runs into a motorcycle that is going straight through the intersection.

  • Lane Splitting: There are a wide variety of reasons why motorcyclists drive between two cars. Usually this is caused by drivers that are stuck in traffic and eager to get to their destination. Lane splitting results in reduced maneuverability for the motorcyclist as well as dangerously close proximity to the other cars.

  • Speeding and Alcohol Use: About half of all single motorcycle accidents are caused by speeding and/or alcohol use. Both reduce a motorcyclists response to their surroundings and increase the likelihood of an accident.
