What Workers Need to Know About the Different Types of Radiation Exposure on the Job

Workers in many different types of industries can be exposed to radiation. Unfortunately, radiation – no matter the type – can cause serious injuries. Here are some types of radiation exposure that can arise in various occupations.

Exposure to These 4 Types of Radiation Cause Workers Serious Injuries

  1. Ultraviolet radiation. This type of radiation injury can result from welding, as burns from welding are like horrible sunburns that can cause keratoconjunctivitis. Also, contact with photosensitizing chemicals can cause blisters and burns on the exposed areas of the body, and some photosensitizer chemicals can induce skin cancer.

  2. Infrared radiation. This type of radiation injury is caused from a worker being exposed to infrared. Unfortunately, with this type of exposure, employees often suffer burns, eye fatigue, cataracts, and headaches.

  3. Microwave radiation. This type of radiation injury occurs in industries that use electromagnetic frequencies such as in industrial and medical settings. When workers are exposed to microwave radiation, burns can occur with deeper penetration than with infrared radiation exposure.

  4. Ionizing radiation. This type of radiation injury is often the most common cause of radiation injury in workers’ compensation cases. This is because the amount of workers that have this type of radiation poisoning has increased due to the need for radiation producing equipment. Sadly, ionizing radiation can cause cataracts, leukemia, skin cancer, and can shorten a person’s life overall.

If any type of radiation exposure listed above has caused you to suffer an injury or the death of a loved one, you need to speak with an experienced injury and workers’ comp lawyer at the Law Offices of David Benenfeld.
