Ways Parents Can Prioritize Child Passenger Safety

Whether you are buying your child’s first car seat or you are transitioning from an infant car seat into a convertible car seat or booster seat, it is important that you know your child is in the right car seat for his or her height, weight and age. Unfortunately, many kids are put in car seats that aren’t correct for their size.

The reason for this is that kids grow quickly and parents and caregivers might not remember the weight and height limits for the car seats their children are currently riding in. Additionally, there are many car seat options, and every car seat is somewhat different and has different limitations and specifications. For this reason, it is essential that parents make it a priority to know their children are riding in the right seat with the right fit.

Since September 13-19, 2015, is Child Passenger Safety Week, the Law Offices of David Benenfeld would like to take this opportunity to discuss the topic of child passenger safety. Unfortunately, many kids suffer serious injuries and fatalities in car crashes. In fact, motor vehicle accidents are still the leading cause of death for children under the age of 13-years-old. The sad fact is that many of these deaths as well as injuries could have been prevented with the proper use of car seats.

In order for parents to help prevent injuries and fatalities from occurring to their children seated in the back seat, they need to do the following things:

  • Purchase the right car seat for their child’s size, age, and weight.

  • Ensure the car seat is installed correctly by getting it inspected by child passenger safety technicians.

  • Register the car seat with the manufacture in order to be notified, in the event of a recall.

  • Sign up to get email notifications from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about car seat and booster seat recalls.

  • Know when to recycle rather than reuse an old car seat. Always use old car seats with caution and remember they have expiration dates as they can break down over time.

If you are unsure whether your child should be seated in a rear-facing car seat, forward-facing car seat, convertible car seat, all-in-one seat, or booster seat, please read more information about the different types of seats at safercar.gov. Also, it is recommended to keep your child in the rear-facing position for as long as possible, depending on your child’s height and weight.

While parents and caregivers need to make sure they take the right steps to ensure the safety of their children on the roads, car crash injuries can still occur — even if a child is in the right seat with the right fit. If another driver’s recklessness caused your son or daughter’s injuries, you need to talk with a personal injury lawyer to learn about your rights.
