Treatments For An Open Tibia Fracture Following A South Florida Motorcycle Accident

When motorcycles crash, bikers often sustain serious injuries to their bodies. Typically, motorcycle wrecks are high-impact, transferring a lot of force onto the motorcyclist involved in the crash. As a result of the forceful impact, riders often suffer serious lower leg injuries.

A common yet serious leg injury bikers suffer from in Florida motorcycle accidents is an open tibia fracture. The tibia, also known as the shinbone, supports the knee and ankle joints and is one of the largest and longest bones in the human body. When this bone breaks, it is usually the result of a high-impact crash.

Because the tibia can break in a lot of ways, the severity of the tibia fracture will depend on the type of break. There are many different types of tibial fractures including stable, displaced, transverse, oblique, and closed and open fractures. With an open tibia fracture, the bone breaks through the skin.

If the shinbone is visibly seen sticking out of the skin, the fracture is more severe. Open fractures can cause more damage, are more complicated to repair, and take more time to heal. Typically, treatment for an open fracture would include:

  • Intramedullary nailing. This is the most popular type of surgical treatment for tibia fractures. This procedure involves a metal rod being inserted into the leg to hold the tibia together and keep the fracture in position.

  • Plates and screws. When intramedullary nailing isn’t possible, or if the fracture extends too far down into the knee or ankle, plates and screws are used to secure the bone fragments together.

Because this type of injury is serious, tibial fractures can take six months or more to heal. Victims of motorcycle accidents will often endure pain and suffering, surgery, physical therapy, and learn how to weight bear and walk again. Because tibial fractures are serious injuries, injured motorcyclists need to collect a full financial recovery to make sure they get compensated for their injuries and damages.
