Six Steps To Take After A South Florida Car Accident

Car accidents in Florida happen everyday. You may never want to think about the possibility of getting into a crash, but you do need to know the steps to take after a Florida car crash.  When an accident occurs you must be prepared to do the right thing.

After a serious car accident, motorcycle crash, or truck accident, it can be overwhelming to try and make sense of what happened.  There may be broken glass, people screaming, sounds of sirens, and you or your passengers may be severely injured.

Learn These Six Steps, and Know What to Do Following a South Florida Car Accident.

  1. Try and stay calm.  If you are able to, try and find out who is injured and if anyone needs medical attention.  Your health comes first, then your passengers, and finally anyone else involved in the car accident.  Panic will only make the situation worse, so try and remain calm and determine the extent of injuries and damage.

  2. Call the police.  Even if the car accident is minor, 911 should be called to send out emergency personnel. You never know if injuries can manifest immediately, within hours, or later down the line. Also, the police officer will file an accident report which may help your case.

  3. Exchange contact information.  Most people are shaken up after a collision and forget to take down the other driver’s contact information, driver’s license number, license plate number, and insurance information.  If there are witnesses on scene, make sure to get their contact information as well.

  4. Document the accident.  Sometimes memories fade and things get forgotten.  Take photographs and make notes about the crash including the time of day, the weather conditions, and details of what exactly took place.  Do not share this information with anyone except your attorney.

  5. Do not admit fault. Even if you think the accident may have been your fault, do not admit it to the other driver, police officer, or insurance company.  Speak with a personal injury lawyer in South Florida about your crash to determine if you have a legal case.

  6. Do not sign anything. The insurance company will most likely try and befriend you, and will ask you to sign documents and waivers or give them a recorded statement.  Do not sign anything or give them a recorded statement.
