New Study Reveals Newer Cars Are Safer in the Event of a Florida Car Crash

If you have been shopping for a car, you probably already know that newer cars have more bells and whistles than ever before. While there are more modern conveniences in cars now than those vehicles even a decade ago, there are also more advances in occupant protection. There’s no secret that newer cars are safer than older vehicles due to all the safety improvements, such as:

  • Front airbags,
  • Side-impact airbags,
  • Electronic stability assist,
  • Blind spot warning systems,
  • Lane departure warning systems,
  • And so much more.

These technological improvements have made cars safer and have started reducing crash fatalities for drivers in newer cars. There is even technology that allows for self driving cars and systems in place to warn drivers if they are drowsy, going to have a heart attack, or have taken their eyes off of the road. While these technological advancements in vehicles are indeed helping to make occupants safer, most of the attention has been directed to improving the safety in the front seat.

According to an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Status Report, more safety improvements need to be made for back-seat occupants. Rear-seat occupants could be kept safer if the back seat of the vehicle received the same type of technology as the front seat. In fact, a study by the Institute and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia found that rear seat occupants had a higher risk for death than those in the front seat, even in newer cars from model years 2007 through 2012. What this information suggests is that rear seats need to be made safer to include safety features found in the front seat, such as side airbags, front airbags and even knee airbags.
