Recently CBS4 reported on the injury of an innocent woman who was shot during a street fight in Pompano Beach. On Tuesday evening, 36-year-old Norma Mancilla was shot when a bullet fired in the street outdoors pierced the door of her home.
Mancilla was rushed to North Broward Medical Center by paramedics and had to have surgery due to an abdominal bullet wound. She is still in critical condition according to a Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman.
This is a frightening and extreme example of a personal injury suffered by a woman right in her own home. Although the suspect involved with this shooting incident is likely to face criminal charges, many cases that involve personal injuries due to the wrongful actions or negligence of others aren’t so clear cut.
Personal injuries involve much more than most people imagine in terms of economic damages and non-economic damages such as pain, suffering and disfigurement. It’s hard to imagine how Norma Mancilla will deal with the trauma of this event. It’s just as difficult for individuals who suffer personal injuries in other ways to learn to find a way to live with life long effects.
