Fort Lauderdale doctor was tragically killed this weekend in a fatal truck accident involving a hit-and-run truck driver, according to Diana Moskovitz and Lazaro Fraga of the Miamia Herald online. Dr. Robert Geronemus, 60, of Fort Lauderdale in Broward County, was attending a medical conference with colleagues in Miami and had just finished dinner with other doctors at the Capital Grille downtown when the accident occurred. He was reportedly crossing Brickell Avenue at the Fifth Street crosswalk with a group of doctors when a truck hit him and sped away. The other three doctors witnessed the accident, along with many others who followed the truck and notified a police officer of the hit-and-run. The truck driver, Richard Anthony Duvall, 40, tried to flee from police but was apprehended, arrested, and failed two breathalyzer tests and a sobriety test. He has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI), vehicular manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Alfonso also confirmed that the pedestrian doctors had the right-of-way in the crash.
Our thoughts are with the friends and family of Doctor Robert Geronemus as they mourn his wrongful death. Although the accident occurred in Miami, the family could choose to file a wrongful death claim from Dr. Geronemus’ hometown of Fort Lauderdale if they wish to do so. However they choose to proceed, we express our deepest condolences to the family of an excellent and successful kidney specialist who served at several facilities in Broward County.
