How Safe Is the Bus You Plan to Ride On?

Although the price of gasoline is down, many people still opt to take a motorcoach when traveling out of state. Because many people plan their vacations during the winter and spring months, it is important that you know what to look for if you plan to take a bus trip this spring or summer.

While many people like to take the bus when traveling many miles in order to reduce their chance of being in a car crash, bus passengers should know that bus safety has been a major issue in our nation over the last few years.

Because the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) wants you to stay safe on the road, there are some things they want you to know when you plan to travel by bus. In order to reduce your chance of being involved in a bus accident while a passenger on a motorcoach, the FMCSA recommends the following three things:

  1. Know the facts. The price of your bus ticket isn’t the only fact that you need to consider when buying a bus ticket or chartering a bus for a tour group. Before purchasing your bus ticket, you need to make sure you choose a motorcoach company that puts safety first. In addition, you should find out if the driver has a safe driving history and has the proper license to drive a commercial vehicle. You can ask the bus company about the bus driver, and you should ask them if they have any policies in place about drivers texting while driving and whether their drivers comply with the federal hours-of-service regulations.

  2. Look before you book. There are phone apps that will help you look into the bus company to find out about their safety performance records, insurance status, and safety results. Before booking a bus ticket, visit the Saferbus Mobile App.

  3. Report any safety issues. If you end up taking a bus trip and notice a driver texting while driving, driving too many hours, or other safety concerns with the bus driver or bus company, it is important to report the issue. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration would like you to report the safety concern via their free hotline at 1-888-DOT-SAFT (1-888-368-7238). You can also call this number to see if the bus company you are planning your trip with has other consumer complaints.

By doing these three things, they will help you stay as safe as possible when taking a bus trip and reduce your chances of being in a bus accident in Florida or in another state the bus travels through.

Whether you did or didn’t check into the bus company before planning your bus trip, you may have a legal claim if you were injured in a bus accident.
