How Do Your Driving Habits Compare to Others?

How much do you drive? Do you drive during the daytime and/or evening hours? Do you drive for commuting purposes on the weekdays and stay home on the weekends, or do you drive on the weekends too? Because the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety was interested in the trends in driver habits, the Foundation conducted a survey of 3,319 drivers from May 2013 through May 2014. The results of the survey, called the American Driving Survey, reveal the following about Americans’ current driving habits:

• Americans drive more miles during the weekdays than on weekends.

• The most Americans drive is during the summer months (July through September) at 30.6 miles per day.

• The least Americans drive is during the winter months (January through March) at 25.7 miles daily.

• Motorists in the Northeast drive the least at an average of 8,468 miles per year.

• Motorists in the South drive the most at an average of 11,826 miles annually.

• Both seniors and teenagers drive less than any other age group.

• Drivers between 30-49 years-old drive the most of any age group at an average of 13,140 miles per year.

• Men spend more time behind the wheel and drive about 35 percent more miles than women, but women take more driving trips than men.

• Drivers with a college education drove more than drivers with a grade school or high school education.

• Drivers who live in a small town or the country drive more miles per year than drivers who live in a city or medium sized town.

The answers to this survey are interesting, but also expected. For example, there are more car accidents that occur during the summer months, and it makes sense since motorists drive more during the summer than winter months.
