Florida Mountain Bike Accident Injuries

Mountain biking was a term originally utilized to describe off road biking on dirt trails. A mountain bike is an all-terrain bicycle with wide knobby tires having 18-21 gears. Road bikes differ, in that they are remarkably lightweight and used for racing or riding at fast speeds. Today, South Florida residents ride mountain bikes on the highway, just like any other street bike. While this area isn’t known for rigorous countryside, Broward County is known for offering over a dozen county parks that are used for recreational mountain biking, including Markham and Quiet Waters which are more lengthy and adventurous trails.

Often times, most South Florida road cyclists have also purchased a mountain bike they like to use for family outings, recreation, exercise, or hauling home groceries. Over 57 million Americans own a bike of some sort. An estimated 70% of children have a bike, and almost 30% of all adults also ride bikes. Over 40% of adults who own bikes admit to riding a bike for reasons related to health and exercise, while the remaining adults who own bikes like to use their bicycles for recreation.

For unique reasons, numerous mountain bike enthusiasts face an entirely different set of risks and challenges than people who ride street or road bikes. While technology has provided amazing improvements, mountain bikes can still cause serious injuries. Hazards and dangers which confront mountain bikers in Broward County can cause life-altering changes, and sometimes even loss of one’s life. The American Journal of Sports Medicine recently published a study that reveals the most common types of injuries sustained from a mountain bike accident.

Mountain Bike Accident Injuries:

  • Fractures-27%
  • Soft Tissue-24%
  • Lacerations-21%
  • Upper Extremities-27%
  • Shoulder and Clavicle-20%
  • Lower Extremities-20%

Over 70% of those injuries occurred from either falling or being thrown off the bike. Interestingly enough, the study revealed that boys and men sustain more bicycle accident injuries than do girls or women. However, females were more likely to sustain serious injuries than their male counterparts. Also worthy of note is that boys ages 14-19 sustained twice as many head injuries than bikers of different ages.

Most head injuries are rarely reported because either the cyclist, pro, sponsor, or team manager is all but eager to admit the widespread incidence, hazards, and damage caused by mountain bike accidents. Bottom line always comes down money, and not wanting bad publicity. Either way, it doesn’t matter. Depending on the nature of the accident, individuals who have incurred head trauma or brain injury from a mountain biking accident may be entitled to compensation.

Some people who are injured from a mountain bike accident don’t realize that they are eligible for compensation. If you have been injured in a Broward County bicycle accident that was not your fault, you need to talk to a Mountain Bicycle Accident Attorney who can assist you in filing a successful claim.
