Florida Fosamax Users Beware – May Cause Femur Fractures

Florida Fosamax users may be eligible for compensation for damages from adverse reactions from taking the drug. Many people with osteoporosis have been treated with a class of drugs called bisphosphonates that are sold under the names of Fosamax, Fosamax plus D and other’s.When Florida Fosamax users were prescribed Fosamax for osteoporosis, it was to strengthen their bones. It has since been found that it can cause the bones to become brittle and break under light stress. It also was prescribed for other problems such as: treating hypercalcemia caused by a malignancy and Paget’s disease.

Bisphosphonates has been linked to two rare types of thigh fractures from Fosamax. These thigh fractures are known as subtrochanteric and diaphyseal femur fractures.Subtrochanteric femur fractures can occur in the bone below the hip joint.A diaphyseal femur fracture occurs in the thigh bone.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) put out warnings in October 2010 that the manufacturers of bisphosphonates, including Fosamax, must add information to the warnings and precautions section of the drug label. In the warning it was suppose to describe the risk of atypical thigh fractures.

A study conducted by the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research Subtrochanteric Femoral Fracture Task Force of more than 300 women who suffered subtrochanteric and diaphyseal fractures found that 94 percent of them had taken bisphosphonates for osteoporosis. Most of the women had been on the drug for five years or more.According to the FDA, the atypical fractures may be related to long term use of these drugs.

Although these fractures are very uncommon, according to the study they account for less than one percent of all hip and femur fractures.Because of the uncertainty of the cause, the FDA said that there appears to be a connection between the femur fractures being reported in the patients taking bisphosphonates.

Due to the recent studies indicating the potential risk of femur fractures from Florida Fosamax users there are more and more people filing Fosamax claims against the manufacturer.

If you or someone close to you has suffered a broken bone after taking Fosamax, contact a Florida Fosamax attorney.

It is important that you contact an experienced Florida Fosamax attorney to help determine if you have a Fosamax claim.Your Fosamax claim may show that the drug caused you harm, or it may have been defective at the time of the purchase.
