Dangers Of Teenage Texting And Driving In Florida

Teenagers seem like they can never put down their cell phones. While using a cell phone is entertaining, as one can browse the internet, check email, post comments on Facebook, and upload pictures to Instagram, using a cell phone while driving can be life-threatening. Unfortunately, teen drivers are more likely than other drivers to participate in texting while driving.

Do Teens Really Know Just How Dangerous it Is to Text and Drive?

Many teen drivers aren’t aware of the dangers of texting and driving in Florida. In fact, many don’t realize that taking their eyes off the road to read or send a text takes about 4.5 seconds. This means that if they are traveling at 55 mph, it is the equivalent of them driving across a football field blindfolded. This is why teens who text and drive are more likely to be in a car crash.

Not only is it dangerous to take one’s eyes off the road, but teens who text and drive also are taking their mind off of the road. According to the National Safety Council, brain activity is reduced when drivers are texting and driving, which can cause drivers to miss seeing up to 50 percent of their driving environments.

Reducing Teen Texting at the Wheel

Because teens are at the highest risk for being involved in distracted driving crashes, it would be great to see more teens sign cell phone bans and stop texting at the wheel. Sadly, many teenage drivers don’t realize just how dangerous it is to text and drive until it is too late.

If you have a teenage driver, talk to him or her about the dangers associated with texting and driving in order to reduce his or her chances of being in a Fort Lauderdale car crash. Also, if you or a family member was injured in a wreck due to a distracted driver, you may be entitled to financial compensation.
