We recently updated an article in our library about a new Florida traffic law. Beginning January 1, 2010, the law enforces harsher penalties for drivers who cause multiple accidents. In our previous version of the article, we explained that the tallying of accidents will not begin until January 1, meaning that drivers who cause three accidents within a three year period before 2010 will not be required to take the state-approved course. Although the law is not fully retroactive, we wanted to update our information to ensure that readers understand how the tallies will work. If a driver does not cause an accident in 2010, he or she will not be required to take the remedial driving course, no matter how many accidents that driver caused within the three years leading up to 2010. However, if a driver who caused two or more accidents since January 1, 2008, causes another accident in 2010, that driver will be required to take the remedial driving course.
