While some people are sad to say goodbye to the summer months, many people welcome the fall and winter seasons because they know the holidays are right around the corner. For some, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s are some of the most important holidays to celebrate. In fact, some people start planning their holiday parties and dinner menus months in advance.
Although the holiday time causes people to think about the yummy desserts they get to have once a year or cringe at the thought of their aunt’s green Jell-O salad, these holidays are often celebrated with friend and family get-togethers. While there are many holiday celebrations that don’t include alcohol consumption, the majority of holiday parties and celebrations involve alcoholic beverages. As a result of celebrating these holidays with drinks in hand, drunk driving crashes have been the result.
This is why Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) supports “Tie One On For Safety,” which started in 1986. This is MADD’s longest running campaign because they want to bring awareness to the fact that during the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day are some of the most dangerous driving days of the year to be on the road.
The Danger of Driving After Drinking
When people drive buzzed or drunk, their reactions are slower, their judgment is impaired, and their risk for crashing increases. Unfortunately, many drunk driving crashes during this time of the year result in severe injuries and fatalities.
“Tie one on” is slang for drinking alcohol, so MADD uses the phrase “Tie One On For Safety” to remind people that drinking and driving don’t mix. Drivers can participate in this campaign by tying a red ribbon on their vehicles in a visible location or they can request a red ribbon decal from their local MADD affiliate.
Other ways drivers can get involved and help reduce drunk driving wrecks, include:
- Make sure you always designate a driver before the holiday celebration begins.
- Display a MADD red ribbon or decal on your car.
- Virtually display a “Tie One On For Safety” red ribbon on Facebook.
- When hosting holiday parties, offer non-alcoholic drinks or mocktails for people who are designated drivers, and provide transportation or accommodations for people who have been drinking.

What Victims of Drunk Driving Crashes Should Do
