Florida slip, trip and fall accidents typically take place as a result of cracked pavement, inadequate maintenance, wet surfaces, and construction defects. Unfortunately, these types of accidents generally result in severe injuries, such as nerve damage. When nerve injuries occur, victims of slip, trip and fall accidents often have to undergo surgery, rehabilitation, and take time off of work to recover.
Just like there are many ways for people to sustain nerve damage—with slip and fall accidents being one of the common causes—there are also different types of nerve damage that can occur. Three types of nerve injuries that slip and fall victims may suffer from include:
- Neurapraxia. This is the least serious type of nerve damage that someone can suffer from. When a victim’s nerves are compressed or loss of blood supply occurs, nerve impulses may be interrupted, but the nerve body remains unharmed. A victim with this type of nerve injury can generally recover within weeks or months.
- Axonotmesis. This type of nerve damage is more serious than the last and occurs when the nerve body is damaged. However, because the myelin sheath is still intact, it is likely for a victim to make a recovery in approximately one year.
- Neurotmesis. This is the most severe type of nerve damage that can occur in slip and fall accidents because there is a loss of nerve continuity. When the nerve body and all of the connective tissues have lost their continuity, it is very unlikely that a victim will recover from this type of nerve damage.
Sadly, some nerve injuries are irreversible and result in permanent life-long injuries. When victims of Florida slip and fall accidents suffer any type of nerve damage as a result of the negligence of another, they are entitled to pursue a claim for damages.
