Know Your Rights: Social Security Disability Insurance

Social Security Disability Insurance provides a safety net for workers who have been injured and are no longer able to perform their jobs properly. When this happens, Social Security steps in to provide you with payments to help with your bills and expenses until you are able to work again.

While it is not something that we think of often, disability is a widespread problem. Amazingly, a full quarter of individuals who are currently 20 years old, will become disabled before reaching 67. If you are one of those quarter, as long as you have worked jobs that are covered by Social Security and your condition meets their definition of disability, you will be eligible for benefits.

Most frequently, Social Security provides cash benefits to workers who are unable to work for a year or more. Benefits will continue until that worker is able to work a regular schedule again.

Some family members, including a current or divorced spouse, children, and disabled adult children that were disabled before they reached the age of 22, may be able to qualify for benefits based upon your Social Security record. These members of your family could be entitled to up to 50 percent of your disability benefit, although the family will be limited to between 150 and 180 percent of your total benefit.

Disability claims will receive periodic reviews to determine if payments are still necessary. In general, payments will continue until the recipient is no longer considered disabled or chooses to return to work.
