Most auto accidents occurring in construction zones are preventable, according to the Work Zone Safety program, sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). Joining with the goal of the program–to educate all drivers on the dangers of reckless driving in work zones on Florida highways–this article shares some of the facts and tips provided on the Work Zone Safety website. Among the surprising facts about Florida work zone auto accidents are the following:
-
Nearly one fourth of fatal work zone crashes involve alcohol or drugs
-
More than half of all auto accidents in Florida construction zones are caused by speeding
-
Over 50% of fatal vehicle accidents in work zones happen after dark
-
The majority of people who suffer fatal injuries in construction zone crashes are pedestrians and vehicle occupants.
Although the number of fatalities from Florida work zone crashes has been “steadily declining since 2005,” one fatality is one too many. According to the Work Zone Safety campaign of the Florida Department of Transportation, the responsibility for highway safety is not just on the DOT. With speeding and substance abuse (alcohol or drugs) among the leading causes of highway construction zone collisions, drivers can drastically reduce the number of injuries and fatalities from work zone crashes by observing the speed limit and laws regarding blood-alcohol content. Refraining from speeding or drinking and driving are not the only ways to help prevent accidents, however. The Florida DOT asks every driver to remain alert, refrain from tailgating anywhere and changing lanes in a work zone, and minimize distractions, such as talking or text messaging on a cell phone. Another safety tip for drivers is to watch for workers and equipment, as they may appear unexpectedly.
