Essentially, the odds are against ADHD individuals who want to keep a job. That’s not to say that therapy, medication, and work environment cannot help people who are determined to find accommodations to help them be successful.
However, typically, most ADHD adults find it hard to keep a job for very long. In that case, it may become essential for an individual to apply for some sort of Social Security Disability Insurance. The Social Security Administration (SSA) does award disability benefits to people diagnosed with ADHD.
What Social Security Needs to Know
To qualify for Social Security benefits, you will need to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you are essentially unable to continue working. The SSA will require that you show proof of receiving medical treatment from a psychologist or psychiatrist, while taking required medications.
If SSA determines that the ADHD individual is dealing with severe symptoms impeding his/her work, they will recommend an individualized assessment recommending the type of work that they believe the individual is capable of doing.
