Backover Accidents & Blind Spots: Leading Causes Of Child Fatality Around Stationary Vehicles

We recently added an article to our library discussing statistics of concern for Florida residents regarding non-traffic, vehicle-related accidents involving children. With Florida having the third largest number of non-traffic fatalities to children under the age of 15 in the United States (Kids & Cars 2006), state efforts must be made to ensure child safety around vehicles. Among the most common accidents around stationary vehicles are backover incidents, which account for forty-four percent (44%) of child fatalities in non-traffic, vehicle-related accidents in the United States. According to a study by Consumer Reports, this Kids & Cars statistic may relate to vehicle blind spots. While national efforts are made in driver’s education courses and other programs to warn new drivers about the dangers of not accounting for their vehicles’ “blind spots” when backing up or changing lanes, older drivers who purchase new vehicles typically fail to account for the differing sizes of their blind spots as compared to their previous cars. As a result, many drivers back over (or run over) “invisible” children because they do not get out of their vehicles, turn their necks to see behind them, or make other efforts to compensate for the obstruction of vision caused by blind spots. According to the Consumer Reports study, some blind zones extend to over 50 feet behind a vehicle, making it essential for drivers to view surroundings thoroughly before entering their cars and checking the area again before moving backward.
