Will Your Prescription Medicine Cause a Car Accident? Palm Beach County Deputy Finds Out

Posted on Nov 24, 2009

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputy who crashed into a tree while driving his patrol car when off-duty earlier this year has been cleared of DUI charges, according to the CBS 12 news website.  The dash cam video clearly showed that the deputy was under the influence of some substance immediately after the West Palm Beach accident, and his attorney admitted that the deputy was impaired, but only by the sleep drug Ambien.  Attorney Grey Tesh explained that Deputy Christopher Grube had taken the sleep drug by accident, thinking that it was a different medication.  During the trial, an expert on Ambien testified about the extreme effects of the prescription medication on some who take it.  One key factor in the case was that Deputy Grube had taken the drug accidentally.

Will your prescription medicine increase your chances of being involved in a car accident?  It certainly could.  Please consult with your physician and read all labels about whether it is safe to drive under your medicine before getting behind the wheel.  You could be charged with DUI if you drive under the influence of a strong drug.
