Don’t think you are safe lounging on the beach. A relaxing beach day may turn out to be a day that can harm you.
Two residents of Miami were lying on the beach Sunday afternoon when a Ford F-150 truck driven by Jorge Monje of Miami, a worker for beach vendor Boucher Brothers struck them.
Monje was closing up cabanas and collecting chairs and umbrellas when he struck the couple lying on the sand at Seventh Street, police said.
The victims were Orlando Jimenez, 37, and Denise Moure, 28 both from Miami Beach. They were taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center. The nature of their injuries was not released.
The owner of the vending company, Perry Boucher, said he was “very concerned” about the victims. His company was investigating into what happened and cooperating with the police as they conduct their own investigation.
Boucher said, “We’ve been in business for over 20 years and have never had an accident like this.”
Monje was cited for careless driving.
The Miami Beach officials have released a statement indicating that the city has policies regulating the use of concession vehicles on the beach.
According to a statement, “The City’s agreement with all beach front concessionaires establishes clear rules and guidelines for the use of motor vehicles on the beach, which is focused on ensuring the safety and welfare of the more than 14 million visitors to our beaches each year.”
Miami Beach has established rules for driving on the beach which requires vehicles to stay west of the garbage cans where the sand tends to be flatter and more maneuverable by vehicles.
The Law Office of David Benenfeld wishes Orlando Jimenez and Denise Moure a full and speedy recovery.
