Two People Killed in Accident Caused by Wrong Way Driver

Heather Rogers, a 19-year-old woman from Clermont, was killed in a tragic accident early last Saturday. She was driving her vehicle with her husband and sister when they were hit by a 1992 Oldsmobile that was traveling the wrong way on State Road 50 between Clermont and Groveland, according to Sgt. Jorge Delahoz with the Florida Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash took place at approximately 12:05 AM Saturday as Rogers headed east on S.R. 50 near Max Hooks Road. Her 2001 Chevrolet was struck head-on by the Oldsmobile that was westbound in the eastbound lanes. According to witnesses, Nathan Lemos, the 32-year-old driver of the Oldsmobile, had been traveling the wrong way on S.R. 50 for a while before he collided with Roger’s vehicle. Both Rogers and Lemos were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, said Delahoz. Lemos was from Groveland.
Rogers’ husband, Aaron Rogers, 18, and her sister, Ashley Cage, 16, of Minneola, were hurt in the accident. They were flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment for their injuries. Aaron Rogers is reported as being in serious condition and Ashley is in critical but stable condition, according to Delahoz.
Troopers are waiting for the results from the medical examiner’s tests before determining if alcohol was a factor in the crash. Delahoz stated that Lemos was previously arrested in 2003 for driving under the influence.
At the location where the accident occurred, S.R. 50 is a four-lane, divided highway with a 36-foot-wide median.
Delahoz was quoted as saying, “There is nothing that Heather did to contribute to the crash.”
Heather Rogers’ and Ashley Cages’ parents could not be reached.
