Two tragic South Florida bicycle accidents occurred within 24 hours of each other in Broward County. Sadly, these pre-dawn bicycle accidents ended the lives of two men on Tuesday, January 4 and Wednesday, January 5, 2011.
The first accident happened Tuesday morning around 6 a.m. when 53-year-old Anthony Vesce was riding his bicycle north on Flamingo Road near Sunrise Boulevard. He was hit by a white sedan; however, no details regarding how the accident occurred have been released. The bicycle accident happened on a stretch of the road where there was no sidewalk or bicycle lane. When police arrived, they found Mr. Vesce dead at the scene.
About 24 hours later, Jim Dorsey, a 61-year-old bicycle rider, was hit Wednesday morning by a Plantation driver while riding his bike near Fort Lauderdale in unincorporated Broward. The reports indicate that Dorsey was crossing West Sunrise Boulevard and was not using a crosswalk.
Both bicycle accidents occurred in South Florida where there is an active bicyclist community. These early-morning crashes were the first fatalities of the New Year. At this point, there is no word if the riders were wearing helmets or if they had their lights on their bicycles.
The Law Office of David Benenfeld is saddened to hear of both of these fatal bicycle crashes in South Florida. We send our thoughts and condolences to all the families and friends of the victims involved.
