Two Dead and Five Injured in a South Florida Car Accident

A tragic car accident took place in West Miami-Dade on Sunday, January 30, 2011. This Florida car crash happened around 10 p.m. Sunday night on a South Florida highway. Officials said the accident occurred on the Palmetto Expressway, where it meets the Don Shula Expressway near Bird Road.
According to officials, the accident was caused because a Chevy pickup truck clipped a Mitsubishi sport utility vehicle. The truck went over the median wall and collided with two vehicles that were traveling northbound.
Authorities described this as a violent accident involving four cars. Sadly, the wreck took the lives of two people and seriously injured several others. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Juniel Dario Cruz, a 21-month-old baby boy, and David De La Vega, 46, were killed in this four-car crash. The baby boy was a passenger in a northbound traveling vehicle, and David De La Vega was in the truck – both were killed at the scene.
There were five others that were injured in this crash. Three people were airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, with unknown conditions. Two victims were taken to Baptist Hospital and are expected to make a full recovery.
All lanes on the Palmetto Expressway, south of Bird Road, were closed for several hours for cleanup and investigation. The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating this crash.
