A tractor-trailer that was heading southbound on I-95 overturned at mile mark 209 in Port St. John and burst into flames. The tractor-trailer was carrying 36,000 pounds of paper at the time of the accident. At least two Brevard County Fire-Rescue tanker trucks responded to extinguish the fire and a third was called for backup.
The accident caused traffic to back up at least three miles in the southbound lanes, but was also backed up in both directions. There were at least three vehicles involved in the crash, including one semi-truck and two flat-bed trailers. Crash debris and broken glass were scattered along three miles of the roadway.
According to FHP Lt. Michael Brown, three vehicles were traveling southbound in the right lane near the Port St. John exit. The 18-wheeler was the last vehicle and rolled up behind two slower-moving vehicles, clipping the second truck. The 18-wheeler then steered toward the median before overcorrecting and striking the first truck. The semi-truck then burst into flames. Three people were injured and two of those individuals were airlifted to area hospitals.
