SUV’s and Minivans Being Recalled by Ford

Posted on Jan 15, 2012

Ford is in the process of recalling 539,000 vehicles to repair defects in their SUV’s and minivans. This includes 286,000 Ford Escape SUV’s in the 2001 and 2002 model and approximately 253,000 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans for models in 2004 and 2005.

The 2004 and 2005 models are being recalled because their torque converter output shaft may fail.  The 2001 and 2002 models are being recalled because their brake master cylinder reservoir cap could leak brake fluid.  This could cause an electrical short in the antilock brake system leading to smoking or fire in the vehicles.

Ford has said that there have been no reports of injuries do to the problem but have had some reports of property damage as a result of fire beyond vehicle damage.

Even though the potential for fire is low, it is recommended that the vehicles be parked outdoors away from structures until this recall repair is performed.

The 2004 and 2005 models recalled for the Ford and Mercury minivans that are for a defective torque converter can cause the vehicle to lose “motive” power, or the ability to move forward and reverse, without warning.  When a vehicle loses motive power the engine continues to run and you can still steer and stop, but it increases the risk of a crash.

The Law Office of David Benenfeld would like to warn owners of these vehicles to respond to Ford’s recall and take their vehicles into the dealerships when the parts are available for replacement.
