Support From Port St. Lucie on Banning Texting while Driving

Posted on Oct 30, 2011

Unanimous support from the City Council for a statewide ban on texting while driving.  The council adopted the resolution and now hopes to pass it on to other Treasure Coast Mayors.

The ban on texting while driving would make it unlawful to type, enter multiple letters, numbers, symbol’s, or any other text into a wireless device used for communication.  It also would ban sending or reading data from the device while driving on highways, streets and roads.

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety has indicated that drivers who use handheld devices are four times as likely to be involved in a crash causing injuries to others as well as themselves.

According to the Institute, texting that includes composing text, sending and/or reading text distracts the driver by directing their vision away from the road.

A statewide ban on texting while driving failed to pass during the last legislative session.  Rep. Ray Pion, R-Sarasota, is sponsoring a similar bill next session, with Rep. Gayle Harrel, R-Stuart, co-sponsoring.

If the statewide statute is passed, drivers will be cited if it is found that they are texting while driving on public roads.

The Law Office of David Benenfeld would like to remind drivers not to text while driving.
