South Florida Motorist Hit Trooper After Suffering Heart Attack

Posted on May 28, 2011

On the morning of Thursday, May 12, 2011, a South Florida accident occurred because of a driver's health problem. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a man suffered a heart attack behind the wheel on Florida's Turnpike.

The 54-year-old driver was traveling southbound in the left lane of the turnpike when his Ford Transit van allegedly lost control and hit the concrete wall. Donald Veliky, of Sunrise, was driving his van around 7:30 a.m. when this crash occurred.

After the van hit the wall, the vehicle traveled along side of it until one of the tires blew out. Once the tire blew, the van was sent into another lane and hit a Florida trooper's undercover car. The trooper's front left fender was smashed; however, he did not appear to be injured.

Mac Mickens, the 56-year-old trooper, was taken to Jupiter Medical Center to be checked out by health care professionals as a precaution.

The Florida Highway Patrol stated that the driver of the Ford van did die after he suffered a heart attack during the accident.

The Jupiter accident ended up shutting down all of the southbound lanes of the turnpike for about four hours for the accident cleanup and investigation to take place.

The Law Office of David Benenfeld is saddened to hear of this tragic news, and would like to extend our condolences to Mr. Veliky's family and friends and would like to wish the trooper well.
