South Florida Car Crash Sends Two to the Hospital

On Monday, March 7, 2011, a very traumatic car accident occurred just before 7 a.m. on I-95 near Sunrise Boulevard. A Hyundai driver was hit by a Ford Explorer that was traveling north on the interstate without a driver.
Authorities believe that the green Ford Explorer veered off to the right and hit a guard rail, which caused the SUV to veer back to the left. Donald Eugene Williams, 21, of Hollywood, and 20-year-old passenger Jessica Lynn Welch, of Davie, were not wearing their seatbelts during the time of the crash. Both the driver and passenger of the SUV were ejected; however, the Explorer continued traveling northbound - crashing into a Hyundai. Steven A. Pico, 32, of Hollywood, FL, was the driver of the Hyundai Elantra that was struck in the crash.
In the meantime, a passing Ford Crown Victoria ran over Welch, who was one of the victims ejected from the Explorer. Amazingly, motorists on the scene used a jack to raise the Crown Victoria off of the injured victim, as she was pinned under the vehicle.
Welch was immediately transported to Broward General Hospital with life-threatening injuries and is in critical condition. Williams was also injured in the crash and was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Mr. Pico, the driver of the Hyundai, and 47-year-old Jose Luis Portela, the driver of the Crown Victoria, were uninjured in this South Florida car accident.
Police are still conducting an accident investigation to determine what caused the multiple-vehicle crash before charges are filed.
