Semi Truck Crashes Into Bank

Posted on Nov 17, 2008

A tractor trailer crashed into a Franklin County bank and then burst into flames.  Now all that remains of the bank is ruins.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the accident took place at the Apalachicola State Bank located on the corner of Avenue E and Highway 98 in Apalachicola.  Troopers said that they received a call at 5:40 AM Eastern Standard Time.

Authorities have stated that the semi truck was traveling eastbound on Highway 98 when it veered off the south shoulder of the road, over the sidewalk and smashed into the northwest corner of the bank.  The large truck burst into flames, which caught the building on fire and caused the building to collapse on top of the truck.

The driver was 43-year-old Joseph Mixon from Apalachicola.  He was transported to Bay Medical Center following the accident with serious injuries.

The exact cause of the accident is still being investigated.  Investigators have not determined if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Apalachicola Police, State Fire Marshal’s Office, Weems Memorial Hospital EMS, Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department, Eastpoint Volunteer Fire Department, St. George Island Fire Department, Carrabelle Fire Department, Apalachicola First Responders, Franklin County Emergency Management, and Harris Bros. Excavators assisted at the scene.

Every year, thousands of semi trucks are involved in serious accidents in Florida.  In 2007, there were 4,264 large truck crashes in the state of Florida.  As a result, there were 4,355 people injured.  Nationally, there were 136,438 large truck crashes, which were to blame for 80,752 injuries in 2007.

There are many causes of large truck accidents that were studied by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).  The Large Truck Crash Causation Study was the first-ever national study to attempt to determine the critical events and associated factors that contribute to serious large truck crashes.
