Repeat DUI Offender Gets 40 Years For Palm Beach Drunk Driving Deaths

Posted on May 31, 2010

A 30-year-old Boca Raton man was sentenced to 40 years in prison by Palm Beach County Circuit Judge John Hoy for killing a bride and one of her bridesmaids in 2006. The man, Edwin Perez, had a prior DUI conviction and was drinking and driving at the time of the fatal Florida car accident.

According to court reports, 23-year-olds Vanessa Wolff and Jessica Boumans were driving in a Mercedes with two other young women on a girl’s night out at around 2 AM when Perez ran a red light at the intersection of West Palmetto Park Road and an Interstate 95 exit ramp near West Palm Beach. Both Wolff and Boumans were killed in the car accident while the other two girls were injured.

During the Florida drunk driving trial, it was revealed that Perez had a blood alcohol content of 0.12 – far above the legal limit – and that he had a previous DUI conviction. His attorney argued that the man was an Iraq War veteran who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and who was struggling with alcohol self-medication since his return.

Witnesses on the other side described their pain and loss following the death of the two girls, which has included bouts of depression, anxiety, and nightmares. An attorney for the girls’ families said that Perez did not show any remorse in the weeks after the fatal DUI car accident, while Perez’s attorney countered that the man had written a letter of apology, but that the letter would have been an admission of guilt.
