Law enforcement officers are reminding Florida drivers to “move over” or pay the price. The weeklong campaign, which started June 23rd and ends June 29th, is designed to let drivers know about Florida’s Move Over law. The fine for a citation is $122.50 in Broward County.
In 2007, Broward County auto accidents claimed the lives of Broward Sheriff deputy Ryan Seguin and FHP Troopers Donald Jennings and Kimberly Hurd. Across the state, there were over 200 car crashes involving police vehicles stopped on roadways, which resulted in 60 injuries.
Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti stated, “For the safety of our law enforcement officers, firefighters and all the workers on the interstates and highways, we want to prevent this from happening again.”
Florida’s Move Over law was enacted in 2002 and requires that Florida drivers move one lane away from the lane closest to the stopped emergency vehicle on an interstate or highway with two or more lanes. A driver who is on a two-lane road, must slow down 20 miles below the posted speed limit when the speed limit is 25 miles per hour or higher.
The weeklong campaign should create awareness about this law and reduce the number of Florida auto accidents involving emergency vehicles.
