Motorists Put the Brakes On for Road Construction in South Florida

Posted on Jun 06, 2011

A recent article in the Miami Herald revealed that road construction in South Florida on expressways, highways and interstates is causing major traffic, congestion, complaints and even Florida car accidents.

The report indicated that many motorists are frustrated having to hit their brakes for road construction, which could continue in some cases for years.

Some of the affected roads include major expressways in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, such as the Don Shula Expressway in South Miami-Dade to Dixie Highway at the Broward-Palm Beach County line and the MacArthur Causeway close to downtown Miami to Interstate 595 in Central Broward. Also, express lanes are being extended from the Golden Glades Interchange to Fort Lauderdale over the next several years.

Drivers are frustrated how long their morning commutes are taking and are worried about the risks of traffic accidents. In fact, Sebastian Garcia, a Miami driver, said that just a few days ago he was in an accident because of the construction work. The crash took place where construction workers are rebuilding the interchange at the junction of the Dolphin Expressway/State Road 836 and Palmetto Expressway/State Road 826.

Garcia explained that he was traveling westbound on State Road 836 when another driver rear-ended his car because of the slowing traffic from the construction work on the roads.

Some of the expansions will benefit the airport and the port and will help with the traffic flow and congestion once the projects are completed; however, until then drivers in South Florida are going to have to remain on the brakes.
