Miami Man Killed in Crash on U.S. 41

A 44-year-old man from Miami was fatally injured in a car crash early morning on Sunday, November 16, 2008. The man, Wilfredo Sabino Marquez Meyra, was ejected from his out-of-control vehicle on U.S. 41 just east of Loop Road in the Big Cypress National Preserve, according to a report released by the Florida Highway Patrol.
Meyra was traveling westbound in a 1994 Ford Explorer at an excessive speed of 119 mph in a travel area with a posted 60 mph limit. At 5:45 AM, Meyra drifted onto the road’s northern shoulder and hit a guardrail. The police report says that he then overcorrected to the left and right several times until his SUV started to flip.
The driver was ejected from his vehicle while it continued to roll several times, according to the report. There were no witnesses to the accident, but the crash was reported by someone who drove onto the scene. Meyra’s vehicle sustained approximately $20,000 in damages. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. There were no passengers in the SUV at the time of the crash.

Researchers found that 1,201 people killed in car accidents in 2007 were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Alcohol related crashes accounted for 1,244 deaths in 2007, which was an increase from 2006.
