Man Rescues 1 Victim from Car Crash

Last Sunday, Ricardo Rodriguez waited with his girlfriend and nephew for a cousin who was in a local nightclub. Rodriguez, a 26 year old man, sat in his 2003 gray Chevrolet truck in the parking lot of a shopping center at Southwest 296th Street (Avocado Drive) and 162nd Avenue in unincorporated South Miami-Dade near Homestead when his vehicle was struck by a gray Mitsubishi Eclipse.
The Eclipse, which had four occupants, hit the front of Rodriguez’s truck before it hit several other vehicles in the parking lot. At that point, the Eclipse raced out of the parking lot and Rodriguez drove after it.
Just moments later, Rodriguez witnessed the Eclipse swerving down an embankment into a canal less than 100 yards from the plaza. He said he saw two people splashing in the water and felt that the right thing to do was jump in the water after them. Rodriguez handed his wallet, phone and keys to his nephew before he dove in.
According to Rodriguez, the water in the canal was cold, black and dark. He momentarily feared alligators might be lurking close by. However, he kept swimming towards the screams. He was able to grab one man, who was out of the car and flailing in the water. Rodriguez was able to pull him to shore and with the help of his nephew, he hoisted him out of the water.
Rodriguez pulled himself out of the canal by holding on to the tall grass. He considered going back into the water, but it had gotten too dark as the car’s headlights had blinked off. The second man that Rodriguez had heard screaming was now quiet.
Police arrived within minutes and Rodriguez dove in once more with a police officer, but they could not find anyone in the darkness. According to investigators, there were two people trapped inside the car and a third was under water when police arrived. All three died at the scene.
Traffic homicide detectives are investigating the accident.
