Man Killed in Stolen Miami-Dade Cop Car after Fatal Crash

Monday morning at 6:30 a.m. a suspect who was involved in a deadly crash with a taxi SUV near Northwest 81st Street and 6th Avenue, was shot and killed by officers after he stole a Miami-Dade police car.
The driver of the vehicle fled on foot from the scene of the crash and was spotted by a Miami-Dade officer who got out of her car and started chasing him. According to the Miami-Dade police, the officer and suspect exchanged gunfire before the suspect doubled back and drove off in the officer’s car.
Miami-Dade Police spokeswoman Lt. Rosanna Corder-Stutz said, “She pursued him on foot, leaving her vehicle. At some point there was a confrontation between the two of them, shots were exchanged, and he was able to get back into the marked unit and steal it.”
The suspect lost control of the police car and crashed 10 blocks away in the Northwest 91st Street and 18th Avenue, police said.
Officer’s caught up with the suspect and more shots were exchanged, police said.
The suspect was killed in the car. Police are trying to determine whether the suspect died from the crash or the gunshot wounds, police said.
The driver of the taxi died in the crash and his wife who was in the vehicle was injured and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital where her condition is not yet known.
The suspect’s girlfriend who was in the vehicle at the initial crash was injured and hospitalized.
The names of the people involved in the crash and shooting have not been released. Police are investigating the incident.
