Man in Wheelchair Killed in Fort Myers Crash

A tragic Florida car crash occurred Sunday, April 24, 2011 involving an elderly man in a wheelchair and a motor vehicle. According to authorities, the accident occurred Sunday night at the intersection of Hancock Bridge Parkway and Orange Grove Boulevard.
Florida Highway Patrol reported that this North Fort Myers crash resulted in a fatality.
Jose Manuel Acosta, of Fort Myers, was in his 1991 Honda and traveling eastbound on Hancock Bridge Parkway. He was approaching the intersection of Orange Grove Boulevard when a man in a wheelchair, located on the southeast corner of the intersection, entered the street.
Acosta, the 38-year-old driver, struck the wheelchair, ejecting Charles Albert Warber, 71, from his wheelchair. Warber, of North Fort Myers, died in this accident around 8:40 p.m. Sunday night.
Upon impact, Warber was thrown into the south crosswalk of Orange Grove Blvd., and his wheelchair ended up in the northbound left-turn lane.
The reports show that the traffic signal light was green for the eastbound traffic on Hancock Bridge Parkway at the time of the accident, and that Warber drove his wheelchair into the path of Acosta's car.
No charges are pending, as police are still investigating this crash.
Sadly, it was a deadly weekend for Southwest Florida motorists, as four people were killed in separate South Florida crashes Sunday night.
