Man Arrested for His Involvement in I-95 Accident

A Port St. Lucie man believed to have caused a severe accident with multiple critical injuries is being held on no bond by authorities.  The crash occurred on Interstate 95 near Hobe Sound on Saturday, December 13, 2008 when according to a statement in the arrest affidavit, the driver “fell asleep” while he was behind the wheel.

Seven people were injured in the accident near Hobe Sound, said investigators.  According to the report, one child and two adults sustained critical injuries.  The accident occurred on I-95 near mile marker 92 at 4:31 AM, according to the report.

Jaime Jaramillo, 41, was the driver arrested.  Jaramillo told the Florida Highway Patrol that “he had just come back from Mexico on a business trip.”  Jaramillo also “advised that he works in Mexico from Monday through Friday.”  Due to his travels to Mexico, investigators considered Jaramillo to be a flight risk, said the report.

Some time during the questioning, Jaramillo stated that he must have fallen asleep and something went through his windshield.  When he was questioned further, Jaramillo ended the interview and requested his attorney.

Investigators said that Jaramillo briefly left the scene of the accident before he was apprehended and questioned by investigators.  Jaramillo was eventually tracked down by investigators after they had dispatched a helicopter and K-9 unit near the crash. 

Jaramillo was driving a Dodge truck.  A silver Honda was also involved in the accident and was carrying seven occupants.  The arrest report stated that two of the Honda’s occupants were taken by Life Flight to West Palm Beach’s St. Mary’s Medical Center with critical injuries.  One child was taken to Martin Memorial Hospital by ambulance in critical condition.  Another two children were transported by ambulance to West Palm Beach’s St. Mary’s Medical Center in fair condition.

Jaramillo is being charged with leaving the scene of a crash with serious injury and leaving the scene of a crash with property damage.
