I-95 Express Lanes Supported by Transportation Secretary

Posted on Aug 05, 2008

U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters endorsed the controversial pay lanes that replace existing car pool lanes.  There has been a lot of confusion regarding the introduction of the new I-95 express lanes, which run from the I-95/Interstate-195 merger to just south of the Golden Glades interchange.

The express lanes were introduced a few weeks ago and have been criticized for causing numerous car crashes as drivers try to navigate in and out of the lanes.  The district director of the Florida Department of Transportation has even admitted that the new express lanes have been causing problems in the beginning.

People were getting confused when they found themselves in the express lanes when they wanted the local lanes to the right.  The district director believes that after the learning curve, there will be a reduction in auto accidents.

Construction workers added more dividers between the express lanes and standard lanes to hopefully decrease the number of traffic crashes.  The space between dividers is now 10 feet instead of 20 feet.

The project costs $267 million and $63 million of that amount was funded with Washington dollars.  Once complete, the express lanes will run from Miami to Fort Lauderdale.  The tolls are set to start in August and will cost anywhere from $0.25 to $2.50 depending on the amount of traffic.
