Heavy Equipment Worker Killed in Hardee County Work Accident

On Saturday, February 12, 2011, a fatal Florida work accident occurred at CF Industries’ Wauchula plant at the Hardee Phosphate Complex in Hardee County, Florida, to a construction contractor’s employee.
Jose Antonio Soto, the 40-year-old heavy equipment operator, was working at the mine around 7 a.m. when he was accidentally killed. Authorities indicated that a road grader backed over Soto.
Witnesses to the accident recall that someone called for Soto and he started walking towards that person; however, at the same time a grader was backing up which he didn’t see. The Hardee County Sheriff’s Office ruled the fatality an accident.
The driver, of the earth moving equipment, who backed over Soto was so shaken up that he was taken to the hospital immediately after the accident. No criminal charges are expected to result in this work accident case.
Soto was contracted through McDonald Construction in Lakeland, FL and was a Winter Haven heavy equipment operator.
CF Industries as well as the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration have also begun an investigation into this matter.
Nick Katzaras, the general manager of the CF Industries mine said, “We are saddened to learn that the accident occurred and resulted in a fatality. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the family of the deceased.”
We are also deeply saddened to hear of this fatal Florida work accident, and would like to offer our thoughts and condolences to the family, co-workers, and friends of Jose Antonio Soto.
