Government Studies Reveal More Drivers Texting

Posted on Dec 20, 2011

With all the new legal bans against texting, drivers are still texting and the numbers have increased 50 percent since last year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has taken a survey that takes an annual snapshot of drivers driving behavior.  This survey included 6,000 drivers ages 18 or older in a national poll.

It has been found that at any given time under 1 percent of the drivers were texting or using a hand-held device.  This activity increased to 0.9 percent of drivers for 2010, up from 0.6 percent the year before.

A phone survey was conducted with drivers and 18 percent said they have sent texts or emails while in their vehicles and behind the wheel.  About half of the drivers ranged between 21 and 24 years old.

The study revealed that in 2010 there were an estimated 3,092 deaths related to crashes resulting in distractions.  These distractions may have been from, eating in the vehicle or using a hand-held device that allows, emailing, texting, and talking on the phone.

The Law Office of David Benenfeld would like to remind Florida driver’s to always be alert, don’t text, and look out for other distracted drivers to avoid an accident.
