Florida Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Against Youth Football League

Posted on Jul 31, 2008

A Florida mother is suing the Tampa Bay Youth Football League claiming that the league’s actions caused her son’s death.  Two years ago, her 11-year-old son died after collapsing during football practice.

The boy died nine days after suffering from heatstroke while he was working out with the Nuccio Jaguars.  The wrongful death lawsuit filed against the league, alleges that the league and its coaches are responsible for failing to ensure the boy was properly hydrated and failing to notice the signs of heat-related illness in the boy until it was too late.

The boy’s mother is suing for all damages permitted under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act.  According to the mother’ attorney, the practice should have been scheduled at a cooler time of year or measures should have been taken to make sure the children did not suffer from heat-related illnesses or dehydration.

The league’s director does not believe the league or its coaches are to blame.  He said that volunteer coaches are with the players for about two hours a day, while parents are responsible around the clock and should be aware of any conditions that could compromise their child’s health on the field.
